Inner Peace through Meditation

शांति - Peace or silence is not one of the objects of the world. Mind has to discover the silence within oneself.  Silence is not like any other object in the world, but it is a state of relaxation of the mind wherein it is free from agitations, conflicts and all types of stress and strain.  The means to attain that silence is neither external objects nor pleasures.  It is at mental level, not at the physical level.  With the help of the mind alone we have to discover that silence within ourselves.

An example that can be cited here is of an ocean.  We see lots of lashing waves on the surface.  They appear one after the other and disappear - creating disturbance on the surface.  If we go deep down in the ocean, we find there is no disturbance at all.  There is only an undisturbed stillness.  So, the superficial disturbance of the waves is only on the surface and there is quietude and stillness at the bottom.

Similarly, we have continuous projections of thoughts that create conflicts and tossing of mind at the superficial level.  They are like lashing waves – they appear, exist and disappear.  They create lot of disturbance in the mind.  Since we live at this level of the mind, we are tossed by these thoughts and become restless all the time.  There is not a single moment when we are free from tossing and agitations.

But if we go deep down in the mind, with the help of the mind, then all superficial projections, conflicts and agitations are resolved.  There we find, slowly, growing relaxation within ourselves.  Hence, the purpose of meditation is to discover that silence or quietude within oneself.
